Bonnie, even if I never see you or speak to you again another day in my life, I will love you forever for showing me this film. Your classes were like air and water to me. Having you as a mentor taught me so much about myself. I am grateful for the journeys.

Yesterday, I was talking about Black Radio,(How did we get on that topic anyway? What were we talking about before that? What about after that? Hmm, I can't seem to remember...ooh, did I digress again? Sorry 'bout that, let me get back on topic...okay, here we go...) which led to Frankie Crocker, (The Chief Rocker), which led to The Evening Bath, which led to Moody's Mood For Love. The combination is the epitome of the Black Radio Experience. Anyway, y'all know me and I had to go to YouTube looking for James Moody. I didn't find him nor King Pleasure, but check this out, I liked it, hope you do, too.
Oooh, look what I just found!!!

Oh the beauty parlor, the manis and pedis, shoe shopping and dress shopping...How I LOVE it ALL! I am so glad to be a WOMAN, (who is also a LADY). Is there anything more fabulous than spiky heels? If there is, I haven't found it yet. Wrap dresses, perfume and just the right eyeliner and mascara, add some lip color, and it makes me wanna just break out and smile. Put it all together and I have to give myself as high-five...ooo whee, I just love it!

More changes in the weather today. Yesterday's rains gave way to a beautiful day of sunshine. I never even ate lunch today. I just stayed in the playground and soaked up some rays. The sun felt good on my face. Hearing the children having such a wonderful time running, climbing and laughing just because it was Friday and they were having fun. With such a busy weekend ahead, it was fantastic being able to just sit and relax while the sun warmed my skin and let me sail off into a noon-day mental vacation.

Rain

I really do love the rain. Sometimes it cleanses, sometimes brings forth new life, sometimes it hides the tears, sometimes it brings nourishment, sometimes it causes a flood. Rain...hearing the rain tap against the window pane, (as Al Green sings so emotionally and Bob Marley so seductively), can conjure up so many run-away thoughts and emotions. The ones I especially like are the thoughts I have while out walking. Clearing my mind, cleansing away the nonsense making room for the sense is one of the reasons why I love the rain so much. It makes me feel renewed and revived.

R.I.P. Alberta Joy
Spring is for beginnings. If there are beginnings, then that means there must have been endings. Spring always reminds me of the cycle of life. Alberta lived her life fully. She traveled every place she ever wanted to go and she went everywhere! She took life for a real ride. I learned a long time ago that tomorrow is not promised to any one of us. Use your gift of life to enjoy your life because this life is not a dress rehearsal, this is it...SHOWTIME! We just began a new spring season last Friday. What is the new beginning for this spring? I have a few things in mind for the spring 2009 season. Time to try something completely new and out of my comfort zone. A little scary, yes. Necessary? Absolutely! It is time to take control of the reins because it may be a bumpy ride down the track, but I'm ready for the ride. Where is your ride going this spring?

Back to Reality

See what a couple of days of nice weather can do to you. I was all googly-eyed with spring fever...then I had to put my down jacket back on. Yeah, the pink rain coat is cute, but , it is back in the closet alongside the green suede coat I wore last Tuesday. Shoot, its cold out there today, for real, for real. Coming back from "gettin my hair did", my head was cold. Where was my hat, or at least my Barack Obama baseball cap? At that point, an old funky bandanna that already knows the shape of my head (lol), would have been a most welcome friend. Finally the hood on my jacket won out and forget the new do, I had to be warm. It was a five block walk to the bus stop. So, as a result, there will be NO MORE pictures of beautiful gardens, references to barefoot strolls or star-gazing. All of that has got to wait until I can leave the beauty parlor without a hat! Then I'll know spring sprung. (If spring is sprung, does that mean summer sums? Just askin' ROTFL)
Peace within and out.
Thank you God, for showering me with Your Special Favor

Look at what we have to look forward to in the very near future. I can hardly wait. This is one of my secret jewels of the city. I am counting down the days until I get the chance to visit it again. I think I'll make a visit on Mother's Day. I'll be surrounded by all of the Natural Beauty I love so much, but then I can immediately return to the reality that any culinary style I desire is easily satisfied with resturants to satisfy every palate imaginable within 10 minutes. Now, that's living. "Thriving is fine, but living is grand." (Dr. Maya Angelou)

From the Mouth of a Babe

Today is Rachel's birthday. I searched high and low in the immediate neighborhood of my school, to try to get an Entemann's cake for her. No luck, lots of fast walking to get to all of those stores and get back on time, but still... no cake. The 99 Cent store had Fruit Cake, probably left over from Christmas, so I took a pass. Finally on the way back, a half-block from my original stating point, I wound up in Dunkin Donuts with the intention of getting donut holes. The next thing I knew, I was asking what flavor was the pink ice cream cake, no, not that one, the one with the flowers? I thought I was doing something nice for a little girl. How very wrong I was. When the class had finished lunch, I walked over to Rachel with the cake and lit candles. She saw her name on the cake and was very happy. The class sang and she made her wish and blew out her candles. She looked at me and said, "This is the best day of my life! This is the best cake I ever had!" That little girl was not the one who had the best day of her life...it was me. To see such pure joy in the eyes of a little girl who's just celebrated turning 6,is the best feeling in the world. Thank you, Rachel.

Still Missing Messiah

It is thirteen years ago today that Prince Messiah was taken away so suddenly. If nothing else, he reminded me to take care of myself. No one should die from the effects of Diabetes at 29 years of age, yet he did. He was an undiagnosed Diabetic. Please sisters and brothers, and I must include myself in this, schedule an appointment for a complete check-up. If there is anyone on this Earth who you love, do it for them as much as you are doing it for yourself. When there are people who love you and you leave them, they have an empty void that can never be filled. Stay here as well as you can for as long as you can. Messiah, I still miss you.
Love,
Nandi

Hang on in there.
Dirk, (my former husband), is now my friend. It took many years to get to this point, but, thank God we did. We're both grateful for the fact that honesty is what we've grown to appreciate about one another. He knows that the truth I believe is what I will share and the reverse is true with him. Reading his e-mails have become part of my routine. Lately, there haven't been any. So, I emailed him. He was feeling poopy. Many of us are also feeling poopy for one reason or another...okay, we're all feeling poopy about the same thing... we're all feeling poopy about the economy. This is the time to remember to name and claim what you desire. Dream, Believe, Achieve. Inspire or Be Inspired. Use your stumbling blocks as stepping stones, and "do what you're afraid to do." (Thanks, Eleanor Roosevelt) Just do it! (Nike) "Be the change you want to see in the world." (Gandhi) "You can make it if you try." (Sly Stone) "We are the ones we have been waiting for." (Alice Walker) If none of these work for you, insert your own. Just don't stay there, shake it off, because God is large and in charge and he didn't bring you this far to let you go. So...hang on in there. It doesn't last always, it'll be all over come morning. Just hold on to God's unchanging hand. Trust and believe. Dirk, as I told you in my email. as Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. said, "Keep the FAITH!" For we walk by Faith, not by sight.
Peace within and out.
YES, I CAN! YES, YOU CAN!

Women's Day
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)
To ALL of the ladies who are members of the Baptist Church and you celebrate Women's Day at your church, you ought to acknowledge Nannie Helen Burroughs. She established the First Women's Day Celebration. She was a lifelong educator and activist. Those of you who attend or are members of Abyssinian Baptist Church,in Harlem, New York City, need to know she belonged to your church. She mentored Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during his early years. She departed this earth in 1961. We need to keep her name on the lips of our young ladies who may not know who she was and what she did. I was the Worship Leader for our service this morning. Our theme is, "The Faith of Christian Women in the Times of Adversity" Rev. Jannie Poullard, fed our souls with a wonderful word from the Lord. And yes, I WILL be like Esther as she demonstrated we may at times be desperate but we are also determined. Yes, I WILL keep the HOPE. Rev. Poullard kept it real and quoted James Brown, "It's a man's world, but, it's nothing without a woman or a girl" Hallelujah, 'nuff sed. Trouble doesn't last always, so make your cake! (Okay, for that one, you may have needed to be there.) There IS a bright side somewhere.
Val and I posed together outside of the church just before she had to go back inside to teach Sunday School. Our colors for the day were Pink and Gray. I think we look smashing in our gray dresses with pink accessories. It is also her actual birthday today, so Happy Birthday, Sister-in-Law, ( who is more of an honest to God blood sister than anyone could ever know)!!!

Happy Birthday Celebration for Chocolate Thunder the Bow-Legged Wonder and Val.
Yonna, Tina and I celebrated their birthdays at Sofrito on 57th just east of 1st. Great food, great drinks, cool atmosphere, attentive staff. Oops, could it become a brand new favorite? Quite possibly. Gotta check it out during the week. The place was packed last night, and Orlando, our server said, this was a light turn-out for a Friday.

Thank you , Bob Marley
Don't let anyone make you believe you can't. Yes, you can. Most of all don't be the one telling yourself that you can't. You better than anyone else know that you can! Don't let F.E.A.R. (False Evidence Appearing Real), become a roadblock to your greater you. You owe it to yourself to stand up when that little voice in your head begins nagging with doubt. Don't overthink the situation, just act on the faith that He didn't bring you this far to let you go.
Let go and let God. Get up, go out and grab your slice of life. Don't worry if you get a few lemons along the way, I'll bring the sugar, we'll get some water and drink our lemonade as we travel on our roads that lead vision fulfilled.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Bell!
So, I'm on a mission. I want to challenge myself to kick the exercise up a notch. Who's gonna help me? I walk every day, but,now I need to workout and I HATE WORKING OUT!!!!! The arms and thighs need a little work, (gee, thanks a lot Michelle Obama with your bad ass biceps) c'mon...which one of my dedicated loyal friends is willing to join in with me on the fitness challenge. How about we make a three month commitment? Ev, I'm calling you out since you live closest to me. Whaddaya say? We'll still have our curves, they'll just be a size smaller and a little tighter. Puhleeze, it'll be so much easier with a buddy. Val, don't duck behind the bookcase, I see you over there, too. You're just a few blocks west, we really could do this, you know. Alright, I'll check it out for us. We'll be slammin' in our wrap dresses this summer.

Fight! Fight the Power! Rally at City Hall
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)
Marina, Jillian and I went together to the big Union Rally at City Hall yesterday. (We never caught up to the others until... well that's another story.) Union members from all over the city and state, were present to raise our voices to the powers that be. Yes, we understand cuts need to be made. Check where there are duplicitous positions, non-essential positions and unnecessary, costly drains on the budget, and then act accordingly. As an educator, I believe people who are brought in from other countries and paid grand theft dough to teach us how to teach our own children should no longer be part of the equation. I've heard their daily salaries are at least $750.00 daily and I've heard as high as $900 daily. They are not doing anything we can't do at a much lesser cost to the system. I'm sure those in question have a very different perspective. This is just one woman's opinion. At the rally, I wore my white UFT knit cap, just like everyone else, this pic of me was taken in my friend's ride.

Did Michael Steele become a Rent-A-Negro right before our very eyes? Why in the world would he feel it necessary to apologize to Rush Limbaugh? Limbaugh said he wanted President Obama to fail. Is that what they really want? If the President fails, the country fails. After 8 years of Limbaugh's guy in office, hasn't he seen enough failure? Michael Steele who spoke so well on Saturday, did a 180 turn on Tuesday. Sad.
