All of the activities that I have participated in this summer have given me a deeper appreciation for my city. From Shakespeare in the Park, to The Jazzmobile at Grant's Tomb, The Floating Pool, The NOBLE Parade through Harlem, Summerstages both at the Adam Clayton Powell State Building and Central Park, to Mondays in Wingate Park, Tuesday Pier 81 Boatrides, Thursdays at South Street Seaport, movies on practically any night shown out of doors in Marcus Garvey Park, Bryant Park, Central Park, Crotona Park and the other local city parks, there is so much to do! If ANYONE is bored it is because they choose to be. For the price of your MetroCard and your packed bag of goodies, one can spend a carefree day celebrating the fact that we live in the greatest city in the world! I haven't yet gone to Governor's Island, Roosevelt Island, Ellis Island or ridden the Water Taxi. There is still an entire month left of experiences to be had. Tonight, The Rhythm Makers are at the State Building. C u there!

Random Thoughts or Great Ideas, It's Just How YOU View It
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be!
Picture this, President Barack Obama and Vice President General Colin Powell. SHHHHHH! Don't say anything. Just take in those words and see it in your mind.. January 2009, Inauguration Day. Now, the General has the much sought after military background and foreign government experience. The President brings a collaborative style of leadership that works with rather than run rough shod. It would be a much safer America with a combination of Obama/Powell than McCain/Anyone. If you've noticed, Gen. Powell has been noticeably quiet regarding an endorsement for either candidate, but has stated his pride in Senator Obama's effort; much more than he's done for Senator McCain . Harlem Week (Month) is upon us! The Grant's Tomb Kick-Off Sunday, was so great! Val and I made friends everywhere we went in the park. Plan to meet some of the folk at Jazzmobile tomorrow night. Yes, we are taking advantage of all of the FREE concerts and more reasonably priced activities, during this time of staycationing and trying to hold on to a dollar and make it SSTTTRRREEETTTCCCCHHHHH. We stopped in The National Black Theatre on Sunday to bid Dr. Barbara Ann Teer a peaceful journey. She was breathtakingly beautiful and the Spirit of the Ancestors were unmistakeably present. I could not believe how touched I was to my very core. The drummers made me move in ways I hadn't danced since Mrs. Gary's African Dance classes that I took in the 70's. I had no control over these movements as they came from a place deep within that connected those drumbeats to my very own heartbeat. It will be unforgettable. It was a privilege and honor to be able to connect at that place, in that time, in saying, "See you later," to Dr. Teer.
Well, it has been one month and two days of the daily workout. I missed three days due to the heatwave. After going out the first day of it and thinking "This is not such a good idea", I decided to do something else instead of the track. And, the two days it was like a monsoon, I couldn't get out there, was a break in the routine. I am down a size and very pleased about that. I am looking forward to seeing what I can comfortably live with as a daily routine to continue exercising daily when my vacation ends. My pressure is great without any artificial prescription medication and I feel fabulous. What's going on with you? So what are you thoughts, comments or ideas? Write on, but as for me, I'm out...

Okay, I'll Say It...
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight,
Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be!
Before I offer a
negative I will offer a positive, because that is the proper way to do
things. It may not be what I really WANT to do but it is what I HAVE to
do. Okay, here it goes...I will applaud CNN for the effort of having Soledad
O'Brien present their two part series Black in America. That is as far
as I can take it. I was anticipating something VERY different from what
was presented. That is where I made my first mistake. They did not tell
me to expect anything, I conjured up in my mind what I THOUGHT would be
included in such a piece. I was THOROUGHLY DISGUSTED with the woman who
cannot find tomatoes in Harlem. Please do not let me jump through the
television and slap the taste out of her mouth! What about the
successful family with the son whofound himself on the other side of the law? Doesn't want to talk about it and they don't??!! Please
give me a break! All of the poor folk had to bare their souls, why did
he get a pass? I found Michael Eric Dyson's part COMPLETELY unnecessary
. We really need to let that one go. For Real. Were all of the people
who we saw all related to the Rand Family? We started and ended part one with them, I just wondered if that was the thread.
Now, following one family, THAT would have been interesting to see
how each life choice was determined. Seeing the different outcomes
...hmmm...there may be something of an idea here. If you use it, you
MUST pay me! I think we as a community know many of the issues, I would
have liked to see more of a balance that presented success in the inner
city. More thoughts about this series later. What do YOU think? One last note regarding yesterday's post. Upon further
consideration, the portrayal of Cindy McCain in that awful cartoon was
the ONLY one that even had a glimmer of a hint of the truth. Even at
that, it would be as vile to actually go with something like that as it
was for the rag mag to actually run their cover. Peace, ciao and write
on...

An' One Mo' Thing...
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be!
I can't believe I forgot to write this with yesterday's post, SCREW YOU, New Yorker Magazine!!!! I love the editorial page of the NY Daily News from the day that dreadful cover appeared. It was just as crude and tasteless as the newly crowned by me, "rag mag's" cover. It featured Cindy McCain sitting on a big bag of money while she popped prescription pills and the senator was wearing a Depends and pushing his walker. Tasteless and crude as I previously stated, but if we want to conjure up false fears, then there we have it America. I truly believe none of us need to purchase that rag even if it is to hold on to campaign memorabilia. I can think of better souvenirs to hold on to for future generations. I would much rather share with my grands of the future the stories of how I participated in this history in the making event and how it has impacted my life forever. I'd much rather share the e-mails from Barack Obama, thanking me for my contributions to his Presidential Campaign, both physically and financially. I'd much rather show the pictures, posters and buttons that made us proud as a people. I know for sure I will share with them them cover of the daily papers that declared the first Obama victory in Iowa. They will have access to the speeches from the last Democratic National Convention straight through to yesterday's historic and very presidential sounding speech in Germany and both of the Inaugural Speeches of 2009 and 2113. (Yes, I do believe in speaking TRUTH to POWER.) None of us need to support the New Yorker Magazine in their effort to create a diversion and to keep folks minds off the prize. Now tell me, what is on your mind? Or, let me hear YOUR thoughts.

Long Time Gone
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be!
Wow, not since Monday of last week. So much has transpired since then. Messy Jesse got messier, (whoo, and HOW!!!), let's just say GREEN, (as in with envy), is most assuredly, NOT his color! To those in the know, HowUdoin? Wendy's show debuted last week. I've only seen snippets, so I cannot comment...however, she and Omarosa, well let me just say, I wish it would have only played in the comforts of our Sistah Circle, so that we could APPEAR unified and DIGNIFIED in public. I watched the clip like I was passing by a train wreck. I wish I could have looked away, but morbid curiosity kept me glued and wouldn't let me look away.I know, I know, but I'm only human. Last night's CNN Black in America, that concludes tonight wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Michael Eric Dyson's piece need further exploration before I write, so until tomorrow, I will reserve comment. Hearing Supa Nova Slom on Star and Bucwild, (three visits since being on the the new station 87.9 in New York), reminded me that not all of the morning shows geared towards the younger generations is all hip-hop news. There was a sharing of knowledge and info that was impressive. Check out his website. His mom is Queen Afua and I think The Ankh Man is his father. His holistic lifestyle is a refreshing welcome from the St. Ides mentality. (Do they even still drink that ish?) The every Tuesday Boatride at Pier 81 is on the agenda again for August 5th. Mo, Val and I are a party, but, you are more than welcomed to join us. Speaking of joining... I'm shouting out beege. Where are you? C'mon, you KNOW I wanna hear from you... "...Colored Girls...." Heeellllo, let's do this. You know we've gotta. Gimme a holla. To the rest of you, YES, that WAS very inside. It was meant to be. Not everything is for everybody...lol. I'm thinking of a BBQ in Pelham Bay Park sometime around the middle of August. Hot grills, cold drinks, good music...whaddya think? By the by, Old Timer's Day is quickly approaching. First Sunday, Crotona Park, Indian Lake...I NEVER miss it...who's going? Val and I will be there for sure. I'm even taking my Mama so she can catch up with the crew from the old nabe. It is always so much fun and ridiculously crowded. I wouldn't miss it for the world. Great souvenirs from the day, hats, T-shirts, pictures...reminds me of the old spirit of community pride, citizenship and neighborhood vibes. I really miss those days and kids today have no sense of it...too bad. Well, this is more than enough. I'm surprised there were no comments. Don't wait for me to post. If you have something to say, be my guest, this is OUR forum. Ciao, I'm out

Cityscapes
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be!
I love the architecture of this city. The beautiful Gothic, Beaux Arts, Art Deco and gargoyles that create the edifices of our city are magnificent. It saddens me to know the Chrysler Building is not ours anymore. I can't wrap my brain around the concept of selling off our city. I know for some it is considered an upward move, but, to me...well, excuse my expression, but it just plain sucks! Look how the sanitized, Disney World Times Square lost the original flava that made it Times Square. Harlem, I won't even go there, The South Bronx is now SoBro, gimme a break. Why a new Yankee Stadium when MaCombs Park was so widely used? As time marches on...

Can You Believe?

Okay, so Murphy's Law was in full effect the last time I posted. Not only was my apology to Word_of _Mouth completely in the wrong place; but, if anyone intends to go on the boatride, Thursday would NOT be the day to go, for sure, because THE BOATRIDE IS ON TUESDAY!!! Boy oh boy, did she chide me for that one. I truly deserved it. If we had met on Thursday, would would just have to throw a slamming Pier Party as I discussed in my apology to her. If you want to see me eat crow, just check the comments and see how I got out of that one. We good, we good, tho. LOL I'm still trying to learn how to add video footage to this blog so that it is really part of the 21st century, but, so far I am having a heckuva time trying to upload it from the source. Just work with me, I'll get it done. Anywho, I'm outta here for right now, check you on Monday, but in the mean while feel free to write your own comments, I'll read 'em. Ciao, I'm out.

Grateful, Grateful, Grateful, Grateful
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be!
Thanks, Hezekiah!!
I received a text message today from a young lady who is my "daughter." No, I didn't give birth to her, but I have known her for a few years and I have mentored her to the best of my ability. She is a college graduate, self assured, vibrant, smart, and she loves God. To paraphrase her text, it went something like this, "I stopped telling God how big my storm is and instead I told the storm how big my GOD is!!!" Isn't that awesome? Thanks, Baby Girl, I love you and wish only great things to happen in your life. If trouble should try to come your way, (and it will), never forget who your are but more importantly WHOSE you are. He will NEVER fail you and He will always keep you. To all who need a word, you just got it. Better still, pass it on to someone else, you'll never know who you will help. As soon as I passed the text on, my girlfriend texted RIGHT BACK and said that was EXACTLY what she needed at that moment. We serve a MIGHTY, MIGHTY God.

Whatta Day, Whatta Day, Whatta MIghty Good Day
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be!
I should have done this earlier, but better late than never in this particular case:
First let me say CONGRATULATIONS to Venus Williams for being the Women's Wimbledon Champion and to Venus and Serena Williams for being the Doubles Women Champions. You go, Ladies. They are ever so gracious and humble. A refreshing sight in the age of spoiled athletes.
Thanks, Salt and Pepa for inspiration for the title of this post. Talk about over achievers... Not only did Val and I do 2/3 of our regular paces at 80 something degrees this morn, but we got on the D and rode to Columbus Circle, walked over to the east side of Central Park, rode the Carousel, showed the secret to the kids in the Billy Johnson Playground, (You know Mo, the marble slide and cardboard routine), left them the cardboard so they too, can whiz down at the speed of lightning, and walked all of the way uptown to 110th. The beautiful formal gardens at 106th were breathtaking as usual and we even saw a wedding taking place. By the time we reached the 2 line, and it was 91 degrees, I WAS DONE!!!! But, it was ALL GOOD. I feel tired, but FABULOUS and it is a good rewarding kind of tired. Now, off to the bathtub to soak. I really am proud of myself for not slacking today ('cause I really wanted to ), but for sure it is easier when you have the encouraging word of a sister-friend who is right there with you. If I haven't said it before, THANKS, VAL!!! I couldn't have asked God for a better Sister-in-Law. Now, about those upcoming boatrides, let me get this tan golden pecan, and I am there! Next Thursday, Shadow Boatride, I wanna be in da house! C'mon crew, let's do this! Who's on board with this? Lemme know. Y'all know I aint skeered to go alone but with friends already along, I won't have to make new ones, (but you know I can and I will if I must.) LOL

I am so glad to be able to say, La-La-La-La-La-La-La, Lelitza is in da house!!! Hiya, Honey :). I realize we've just gotta keep on goin', especally now when times are so tough. The prices of everything are WAAAAY outta control, Uncle Sam digs deeply and gets his cut first, and then we've just gotta make do. With each of us holding on to the next, we will make it. Our people have ALWAYS persevered, and so will we. It is what it is and we are WHO we are. Hold on,don't let go, and as Adam said, "Keep the faith, Baby!"

Is It Me?
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be!
Ev needs to be congratulated for meeting me on the track two days in a row! Big Up to ya, keep up the good work. Now, one of those, "did I really see what I thought I saw?" moments. Answer: Yup, I did. Right after seeing a runner drink from the fountain we spied a man who'd just left the dog run with his great big pooch, let the dog drink from the SAME FOUNTAIN the runner used!!! EEEWWW, how disgusting is that? Listen all you pet owners out there, the water fountains in the parks ARE FOR PEOPLE!!! In New York during the summer, there is ALWAYS an open fire hydrant nearby, a neighborhood deli or a bodega, get your pet a drink ANYPLACE other than where the humans get theirs, now I know how the expression dog breath got started. LOL Okay a little levity here to break the tension I feel growing in the room. Thanks for letting me rant.

One Sixth of the Way
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be!
One full week. Thanks for the encouragement, Word_of_Mouth. I am the world's BIGGEST procrastinator, but it is true, when I do manage to get started, I don't quit. I don't like it left hanging in the middle. That goes for my belly, too. That especially goes for my belly! LOL. I've got on the orange dress today, yeah, the kareoke dress that gives me the courage to sing, "Ball of Confusion" and "Lady Marmalade" in front of a room full of fully tanked strangers at the shore...yes, that orange dress. Well, it looks cute! With the new haircut and the cute dress, a friend of my son's who didn't know it was me a gave me a second look. When he realized it was me, he blushed and said, "Oh, sorry, Ma. I didn't know it was you, I was coming to talk to you. Please don't tell your son, I don't mean any disrespect." I chuckled and told him he made my day,and that I still got it goin' on. :) I know, I know but the ego needs stroking every now and again and a genuine compliment goes a long way. It is those unexpected moments that will help to keep me motivated when the going gets tough. Val joined a club and gave me a visitor's pass. I will join her on Monday. The grandma arms are next on the hit list.

Just Gotta Do What You've Gotta Do
Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be!
So now is day five of the serious six week workout daily program. I get up each morning asking myself is this the day I'm going to have to coax my chocolate loving chunky butt out of bed? So far the thought of wearing something that hugs in all of the right places is motivation enough. I constantly tell my left ankle to "shut the hell up, because you weren't complaining before, lugging around those cute little Supreme Pizzas from Dunkin Donuts!" LOL Today Val joined me and we expect Ev later this week. We're going to have to reward ourselves with a new outfit at the end of the six weeks. Something to wear on vacation, perhaps...hmmm, sounds good. Something that goes well with a tan (and a colorful beverage with a tiny umbrella):) And then there's the shoes, who can forget the shoes...something strappy and of course high, (okay not that high, gotta be able to shake a tailfeather on the dance floor). In fact I've got to go now because I think I want to work out again. Those shoes are just calling my name, track, watch out, I'm on the way again. Maybe, I'll get two pairs of shoes, but then I'll have to get an outfit to match the extra pair of shoes, too. This exercise thing is going to get me a whole new wardrobe. I'm loving it already!
