100 Days

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

The President gave a Press Conference to acknowledge and reflect on his job performance for the past 100 days. Never has this country witnessed such open and honest government. He always accepts responsibility for his missteps and makes us believe all of his choices have been carefully weighed, even if he ultimately stands alone with his final decision. I respect this man so much and he makes me want to walk with my head held even higher. A role model our children can really look up to. It was a long time coming and well worth the wait. A 100 days that encompasses so many changes this nation has faced and faced challenges we are rising above. Thank you, Barack Obama, MY PRESIDENT!

What Were YOU Doing at 3:04 AM ?

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

At 3:04 am, it was officially Kerrell's birthday. Happy Birthday Kerrell Tarik! My son is 27 today. My oh my, where has the time gone? I remember it all as if it were yesterday. I can see the first steps in my mind's eye. I remember him calling me, "Mrs. Johnson Mommy" because the children all called me Mrs. Johnson. I still recall the shock of seeing him at 15 months take himself to the bathroom and use it because he wanted to do everything 3 year old Chris did. I can hear my three year old telling me on the way to Children's Circle Day Care, that, "Kerrell is a dumb name, call me Michael Jackson." And he'd only answer to the name Michael Jackson for the next two weeks.Where is the kid who kept going to the hospital because he really couldn't float down off the monkey bars or was not tougher than the coffee table, hammer, bicycle chain, car, or staircase? Whew, how glad I am that we survived. But I kinda miss the boy who depended on me. I like the man who you grew up to be, but I miss my boy.

Rest In Peace, Crazy Ronald

Too many of my contemporaries are dying of cancer. What the hell is going on? There is so much wrong that we don't know about and it affects all of us in ways we are too afraid to try to understand. We are blissfully or perhaps pusillanimously ignorant. But I know in my heart of hearts that something aint right.

I'm gonna miss Ronald and his crazy ass. If you ever bought socks on 125th, then you knew Ronald. He was my friend from my 'tween years til now. That's a looong time. Yeah, we went waaay back. Much respect to a brother who did what he had to do to make it happen. I aint mad at cha and please know you left a void in my heart. Forever a member of the Friendship Hall of Fame.

In Sorrow,

Linda

Where Did The Week Go?

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

Friday already...so much accomplished, so much more yet to do. Shout out to Jill on her birthday. Thankful to God for all of the blessings. Grateful to be able to share my love with all of those around me. Gracious that those who have forgiven did so and humbled by those who accepted mine. Accepting of those whose point of view is opposing and hopeful they will be in turn. Overjoyed to re-connect with long lost friends and sad to say good-bye to Mary Dumas Sapp. I know prayer goes where I cannot and grateful to know travel mercies were granted. Wow, what a week!

I told Star this song always reminds me of the stories he would tell on air about how loves "playing the kissing game." Yes, Star I agree, there is definitely an art to kissing. What's there not to like about playing the kissing game?

In memory of Carl Walker, who found 6th grade so torturous, he took his own life. I shed tears for the pain he endured as an institutional system failed him as he cried out for help.

HE LIVES!!!!

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

I serve a risen Christ. He lives. Happy Resurrection Sunday!!

Rev. Cynthia Gatling-McCants, put it DOWN this morning during Sunrise Service. she asked, "Is it that we don't really believe?" I am a believer. He saved me from a sure death and has protected me from my own poor choices...so I know, that I know, that I know, that I serve a risen Christ. It feels good to know that I can be counted among the believers. It was also Communion Sunday at Greater Zion. At 6:00 AM, the church was a full house and a new member joined. It was good being out with others who know what I know. If you've never been to a Sunrise Resurrection Service, do yourself a favor and make a point not to miss it next year. What an extraordinary special treat. Now, I'm off to put the leg of lamb in the oven and prep the sides. Enjoy the day with the belief that we are serving a risen Christ. Hallelujah!

"When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun, oh Lord, have mercy on me."

For Colored Girls

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

For the love of My Sister, Ntozake Shange

Y'all know how much I love poetry. Bonnie, are you with me? WE LOVE POETRY. For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, is my absolute FAVORITE production of poetry set to stage. After a more than 20 year quest, I have replaced my Original Broadway Cast Recording of the show. In addition, the vendor burned a CD version for me to use as I archive the vinyl. I played my first album to death, my former husband can attest to that one...Hmmm, did you have something to do with the first ones' disappearance? I always suspected you... lol. Anywho, a sister couldn't have been more excited when she saw the familiarly shaped shipping carton. Got weak in the knees and couldn't get the tape off of the box fast enough ( or should I say enuf?) I slipped off the protective plastic sleeve and stared at my treasure for a little bit. Opening the cover, Lady in Red, Trazana Beverley, caught my eye first. Then I said aloud, "Hello, Old Friends, I have missed you more than you could ever know." We'd met at the Henry Street Settlement, at the Joseph Papp Theatre and on vinyl. I considered them longtime friends who knew me as well as I knew them. They'd shared their stories with me and certainly, I shared mine with them. Yes, that how poetry affects me, it is a shared experience with the writer and the words. Since these eight ladies were the vehicle for the words, they are forever intertwined with the work. I remembered as a Theatre student practicing my monologue, no assistance; and as a real adult woman who had to make adult decisions embracing, a laying on of hands i found god in myself. This entire work celebrates womanhood. The joys, pains, sorrows, love, discoveries and experiences. April is National Poetry Month. Sisters, do yourself a favor and check the choreopoem out of the library in book form. PBS has a video version that was filmed several years after the Broadway production. It is a very different experience from the Broadway stage show. Worth a view, though.

The Only Thing Constant Is Change

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

With Barack Obama as President of the United States, America voted for change. I think about when I knew I was changed and changing. Long after I was "saved", I actually had to get saved, rescued, matter of life or death, yes, saved. I was carried out in a rip tide on August 17, 2005. It was a day that changed my life. I'd already accepted that this was my certain death and I told God I was not afraid but I asked him to please let my earthly body be recovered so that my mother would have something to say good-bye to. I also asked God to remember my mother had already lost my brother in a car accident in 1988. I had this entire conversation with God in under a second as I turned myself parallel and swam at an even pace. Each time I thought I was making headway, back out I was carried. The voice of God spoke loudly enough for me to know it certainly was no whisper. He said, "I've got you." I knew then I was forever changed. He instructed me to raise my hands and sure enough the life guard was on his way because he'd seen me get swept up. How was I changed? I knew I had more in my life to do, see and feel. Experience other than what was familiar and try anything I wanted to try without placing boundaries on what I would allow myself to imagine. I am in the midst of watching how we adapt to what we have to do as a nation, we have to change. We have to become cohesive and no longer divisive. If our nation loses, we all lose. If the automobile industry goes bust, what happens to the workers whose very lives depend on that industry? America invented the car, how did the CEO, CFO, COO and all the others allow it to get to this point? Time for change...Globally, we must elect to live as green as possible so that our childrens' grandchildren will have a viable planet. Change begins with me. Personal change, professional change, positive change...

An Attitude of Gratitude

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

Congrats to Rhandle on being accepted to Pace Academy!...WTG, TiTi's Girl!!!

Happy 2nd Birthday my little door bell ringing, Isabella Mia, my little Izzy Belle!

I woke up this morning feeling so refreshed. As I took my usual sunrise stroll, I offered God my heartfelt thanks and gratitude. A brand new day to glorify His name and to praise and worship Him. Spring really is in the air and I feel so alive with the blessings of the Lord. I am getting ready for church and when I go to the altar for prayer, I will first say, "Thank you, for all my blessings seen and unseen and far too many to number." I will then pray for all of those who have asked me to do so for them and for those who may feel too weak to pray for themselves but I offer them the wisdom that prayer goes where we cannot. I am reminding everyone to walk by faith, not by sight. May God continuously pour his endless blessings upon you and yours.
