Gone, but NEVER forgotten

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

Another anniversary is upon us and still there is no justice for Sean Elijah Bell. Bernard Kerik saw time behind bars that he so rightly deserves, and I am confident the members of NYPD who also need to join their former chief will soon be on the other side of the bars. No, Sean, YOU will never be forgotten! May you rest in eternal peace.

Erick you are truly a blessing in my life. Thank you for such a wonderful birthday celebration in the USVI. We truly lived the beautiful life in St. Thomas, didn't we? From the gorgeous suite to the delicious meals you prepared for us, the fantastic pool outside our bedroom and the private beach all to ourselves, I couldn't have asked for a more romantic setting to celebrate this milestone birthday. How can I ever thank you enough? Words don't exist to describe my joy. I can't wait for our return visit. February just can't get here soon enough. :)

What a roller coaster ride this summer has been! Still reeling from losing Michael Jackson. Trying to understand why it took 70 days to lay him to his final resting place. I learned its fine to leave some folk behind and meet new ones along the way. I've learned the REAL meaning of love and truly appreciating it. So that I know it and recognize it for what it is, and cherish it. I know now in the past I was sleepwalking through it and now I am ALIVE with it. I am vibrant and joyful and delighted in the Lord. He has blessed me abundantly with the kind of personal joy some don't even know exists, so I'm safe with them not trying to steal mine, 'cause they jes don't know nuttin' 'bout it to begin wit! I've had my fair share of adventures and enough rain to last three summers. It was nice and I am delighted. It was tough hearing my dear beloved, Sister Ruth Skinner made her transition on Tuesday. We are all better for having had her in our lives. May she rest in peace, eternally. I will miss you, Baby Girl! And now it is time to prepare to meet and greet those children who have anticipated Kindergarten all summer. Some will be fearful, some will be filled with trepidation and others will run right in and want to immerse themselves in everything. I am responsible for making them love school and ensuring their first experience is a positive one. I am up for the challenge to make a difference in their lives as they make a difference in mine.

A Fitting Tribute

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

Michael Jackson was honored with grace, dignity and plenty of tears yesterday. A man whose life and voice was stilled far too soon, was recognized as The Greatest Entertainer in the World.Yes, that he was. Michael Joseph Jackson will always be alive in my heart. His legacy of love and music will live eternally. I pray the peace that eluded him in life is finally his in death.

8 Days

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

For the next 8 days, whenever administrative abuse of power comes my way, (and it will), I will repeat in my head the following, "The blood of Jesus is against you." With Jesus with me, I am safe, secure and victorious. Amen

It is almost comical how everyone claims Jesus, but when it comes down to it, they don't really know Him at all. I am so glad that I REALLY know Him.

To All My Puerto Rican Sistahs and Brothas, Have a great day at the PARADE!! To the American Flag, Happy Flag Day. This flag is a symbol of enduring freedom.

Today's message is to me from me. I need to hear, see, smell and taste this one today. Let go and let God. Do not try to figure out, understand or make sense of anything. Just let it go and go with God. He will never let you go or forsake you. He is there in times of joy and times of sorrow. He sees all and loves you through your trials and your tribulations. His hand is unchanging and His love endures forever. He is my rock, my sword, my shield. He is my wheel in the middle of the wheel. I know He'll never let me down. He is the beginning and the end. Just let go and let God. He can do everything except fail. Praise His holy name for He is worthy to be praised. Hallelujah!

I am so glad school is almost over, cuz my supervisor doesn't know this side of me and she really doesn't want to. Please STAY OUTTA MY FACE with nonsense. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if mine doesn't match yours, so what? It is still and will ALWAYS BE MY opinion. Just in case you missed the memo, I do have freedom of speech in this country. And because this is MY BLOG, I can put you on blast here. Oh yeah, I just did. Thank you, God. You bridled my tongue when I was about to tell both the Principal and Assistant Principal what I REALLY thought. Oh yes, thank You,Lord!

How I detest micro-management. With needing to focus on real issues, I wish that the managers of early Childhood schools learn to realize the children need close supervision at all times, not the adults. Telling an adult what they can and cannot eat on a cook-out is ridiculous to say the least. I am so glad I took today and tomorrow off. I need my job and I needed a break from the bullshit I've been handed lately. Program changes with just days left to the term and the aforementioned cook-out menu bullshit tells me it may be time to open my own business again and run it how I see fit. I just don't have the patience for nonsense like I used to. I may have just gotten the jump start kick in the butt I needed to make me make some moves for myself. Maybe I will wind up thanking them for the nonsense.

Not in Vain

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

Rest in Peace, Police Officer Omar Edwards

Today was the Home Going Service for Officer Omar Edwards. I pray his death was not in vain. We all chanted change...it is long overdue. My heart is so heavy, as so many times before. Could have been my son, nephew or child I watched grow up who was victimized and then a story fabricated to cover the cold hard facts. It happens every day, just this time, they didn't recognize one of their brethren. Yet a tale woven to protect the guilty just doesn't add up with a shot to the back. Please let this be one that didn't die in vain.

Hope

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

After such an emotional Friday, when I heard about the assassination of Police Officer Omar Edwards, I needed the innocence of a small child to remind me that I should still hold on to hope. Ashley has got to be one of my favorite children of all time. I had her brother 4 years ago when she was a baby in the stroller. Now there's another baby in the stroller who she declared was going to be mine, too. Ashley and I were to see the movie, "Up," yesterday. Well, you all know about the best laid plans. We shopped for healthy snacks as she categorized them. We did a good job of buying strawberries and water. My cajoling her to submit to a bag of chips, went unheeded. However, once we made it to the mall, it was a completely different story. After finding the perfect pair of i-Carly pink sunglasses, it was time to see the show. To our dismay, the movie was sharing the theatre with another movie. We would have had to wait much too long. Ben and Jerry helps to reduce disappointment. Keeping with the healthy theme, she ordered the biggest Chocolate Brownie Frozen Yogurt Waffle Cone I'd ever seen in my life. Six year olds have great big eyes and very small tummys. Her saying "It's low fat," had me rolling in the aisles. Needless to say, she was done and the thought of buying her a meal was out of the question. She nearly burst trying to eat her yogurt. We had fun at the photo booth making funny faces. We put dandelions in our hair and chased the clouds away by singing, "Mr. Sun," and the new song she made up as she went along. It was hilarious when she told me to sing it back to her, and now I know what I sound like when I'm teaching a new song to the class. Anyway, I learned not seeing the movie was the best thing that could have happened, because that six year old and I had so much fun. I learned there is still a reason to hope and work towards a better day. The best part of the day was when that baby told me not to forget to pray....Out of the mouths of babes.....

Memorial Day

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight The Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

I hope you did more than consider it the start of the summer. I saw a WW II Veteran virtually ignored as he asked for donations for the VFW. Too many young people have paid the price for wars old fools decide upon. I not only thought about heroes of wars abroad, but equally disturbing are those who are victims of war here on the streets. Sean Bell should have been celebrating his birthday on the 19th. Sean's story has impacted so many. His story is the shame of NYC. Somehow Happy Birthday just doesn't seem like enough....

Letting Go

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

is so hard to do.

No matter how much we want and no matter how much pray for them not to, children grow up, become adults, and do what they want to do. It is difficult when what we've wished for actually does happen. I had such a wonderful plan in store for a celebratory occasion and just like that, my grown up son took all of the wind out of my sails. There was nothing I could do but accept his decision. It stunned and saddened me but clearly illustrated the reality of it all. I didn't let go, but he did.

I feel like I need to check for ducklings behind me. I've stepped in enough mud and puddles to last until next spring. I worn all of my rain gear several times over and had to replace umbrellas twice because the season has been so rough. The up side is the rain is calming to me and my spirit rests well. I feel warm and tender, sweet and soft, loved and loving while the rain hits the windowpanes and dances on the pavement.

"March winds blow bringing April showers, April showers bring May flowers." (Early Chilhood Classroom Poetry)

Why oh why is it raining so much? April is gone and I want to wear spring clothes. Instead, I feel like my only accessories should be Lily Pads and Wellies. I love the rain, yet, I am tired of the umbrellas, wet clothes, chill in the air and puddles around my ankles. But, I won't allow myself to complain too loudly, because somewhere on this Earth, there has got to be a need for the flowing waters. I just wish the two would meet up, and the sooner, the better for me. LOL

100 Days

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

The President gave a Press Conference to acknowledge and reflect on his job performance for the past 100 days. Never has this country witnessed such open and honest government. He always accepts responsibility for his missteps and makes us believe all of his choices have been carefully weighed, even if he ultimately stands alone with his final decision. I respect this man so much and he makes me want to walk with my head held even higher. A role model our children can really look up to. It was a long time coming and well worth the wait. A 100 days that encompasses so many changes this nation has faced and faced challenges we are rising above. Thank you, Barack Obama, MY PRESIDENT!

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

At 3:04 am, it was officially Kerrell's birthday. Happy Birthday Kerrell Tarik! My son is 27 today. My oh my, where has the time gone? I remember it all as if it were yesterday. I can see the first steps in my mind's eye. I remember him calling me, "Mrs. Johnson Mommy" because the children all called me Mrs. Johnson. I still recall the shock of seeing him at 15 months take himself to the bathroom and use it because he wanted to do everything 3 year old Chris did. I can hear my three year old telling me on the way to Children's Circle Day Care, that, "Kerrell is a dumb name, call me Michael Jackson." And he'd only answer to the name Michael Jackson for the next two weeks.Where is the kid who kept going to the hospital because he really couldn't float down off the monkey bars or was not tougher than the coffee table, hammer, bicycle chain, car, or staircase? Whew, how glad I am that we survived. But I kinda miss the boy who depended on me. I like the man who you grew up to be, but I miss my boy.

Rest In Peace, Crazy Ronald

Too many of my contemporaries are dying of cancer. What the hell is going on? There is so much wrong that we don't know about and it affects all of us in ways we are too afraid to try to understand. We are blissfully or perhaps pusillanimously ignorant. But I know in my heart of hearts that something aint right.

I'm gonna miss Ronald and his crazy ass. If you ever bought socks on 125th, then you knew Ronald. He was my friend from my 'tween years til now. That's a looong time. Yeah, we went waaay back. Much respect to a brother who did what he had to do to make it happen. I aint mad at cha and please know you left a void in my heart. Forever a member of the Friendship Hall of Fame.

In Sorrow,

Linda

HE LIVES!!!!

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

I serve a risen Christ. He lives. Happy Resurrection Sunday!!

Rev. Cynthia Gatling-McCants, put it DOWN this morning during Sunrise Service. she asked, "Is it that we don't really believe?" I am a believer. He saved me from a sure death and has protected me from my own poor choices...so I know, that I know, that I know, that I serve a risen Christ. It feels good to know that I can be counted among the believers. It was also Communion Sunday at Greater Zion. At 6:00 AM, the church was a full house and a new member joined. It was good being out with others who know what I know. If you've never been to a Sunrise Resurrection Service, do yourself a favor and make a point not to miss it next year. What an extraordinary special treat. Now, I'm off to put the leg of lamb in the oven and prep the sides. Enjoy the day with the belief that we are serving a risen Christ. Hallelujah!

For Colored Girls

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

For the love of My Sister, Ntozake Shange

Y'all know how much I love poetry. Bonnie, are you with me? WE LOVE POETRY. For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, is my absolute FAVORITE production of poetry set to stage. After a more than 20 year quest, I have replaced my Original Broadway Cast Recording of the show. In addition, the vendor burned a CD version for me to use as I archive the vinyl. I played my first album to death, my former husband can attest to that one...Hmmm, did you have something to do with the first ones' disappearance? I always suspected you... lol. Anywho, a sister couldn't have been more excited when she saw the familiarly shaped shipping carton. Got weak in the knees and couldn't get the tape off of the box fast enough ( or should I say enuf?) I slipped off the protective plastic sleeve and stared at my treasure for a little bit. Opening the cover, Lady in Red, Trazana Beverley, caught my eye first. Then I said aloud, "Hello, Old Friends, I have missed you more than you could ever know." We'd met at the Henry Street Settlement, at the Joseph Papp Theatre and on vinyl. I considered them longtime friends who knew me as well as I knew them. They'd shared their stories with me and certainly, I shared mine with them. Yes, that how poetry affects me, it is a shared experience with the writer and the words. Since these eight ladies were the vehicle for the words, they are forever intertwined with the work. I remembered as a Theatre student practicing my monologue, no assistance; and as a real adult woman who had to make adult decisions embracing, a laying on of hands i found god in myself. This entire work celebrates womanhood. The joys, pains, sorrows, love, discoveries and experiences. April is National Poetry Month. Sisters, do yourself a favor and check the choreopoem out of the library in book form. PBS has a video version that was filmed several years after the Broadway production. It is a very different experience from the Broadway stage show. Worth a view, though.

The Only Thing Constant Is Change

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

With Barack Obama as President of the United States, America voted for change. I think about when I knew I was changed and changing. Long after I was "saved", I actually had to get saved, rescued, matter of life or death, yes, saved. I was carried out in a rip tide on August 17, 2005. It was a day that changed my life. I'd already accepted that this was my certain death and I told God I was not afraid but I asked him to please let my earthly body be recovered so that my mother would have something to say good-bye to. I also asked God to remember my mother had already lost my brother in a car accident in 1988. I had this entire conversation with God in under a second as I turned myself parallel and swam at an even pace. Each time I thought I was making headway, back out I was carried. The voice of God spoke loudly enough for me to know it certainly was no whisper. He said, "I've got you." I knew then I was forever changed. He instructed me to raise my hands and sure enough the life guard was on his way because he'd seen me get swept up. How was I changed? I knew I had more in my life to do, see and feel. Experience other than what was familiar and try anything I wanted to try without placing boundaries on what I would allow myself to imagine. I am in the midst of watching how we adapt to what we have to do as a nation, we have to change. We have to become cohesive and no longer divisive. If our nation loses, we all lose. If the automobile industry goes bust, what happens to the workers whose very lives depend on that industry? America invented the car, how did the CEO, CFO, COO and all the others allow it to get to this point? Time for change...Globally, we must elect to live as green as possible so that our childrens' grandchildren will have a viable planet. Change begins with me. Personal change, professional change, positive change...

An Attitude of Gratitude

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

Congrats to Rhandle on being accepted to Pace Academy!...WTG, TiTi's Girl!!!

Happy 2nd Birthday my little door bell ringing, Isabella Mia, my little Izzy Belle!

I woke up this morning feeling so refreshed. As I took my usual sunrise stroll, I offered God my heartfelt thanks and gratitude. A brand new day to glorify His name and to praise and worship Him. Spring really is in the air and I feel so alive with the blessings of the Lord. I am getting ready for church and when I go to the altar for prayer, I will first say, "Thank you, for all my blessings seen and unseen and far too many to number." I will then pray for all of those who have asked me to do so for them and for those who may feel too weak to pray for themselves but I offer them the wisdom that prayer goes where we cannot. I am reminding everyone to walk by faith, not by sight. May God continuously pour his endless blessings upon you and yours.

Bonnie, even if I never see you or speak to you again another day in my life, I will love you forever for showing me this film. Your classes were like air and water to me. Having you as a mentor taught me so much about myself. I am grateful for the journeys.

Yesterday, I was talking about Black Radio,(How did we get on that topic anyway? What were we talking about before that? What about after that? Hmm, I can't seem to remember...ooh, did I digress again? Sorry 'bout that, let me get back on topic...okay, here we go...) which led to Frankie Crocker, (The Chief Rocker), which led to The Evening Bath, which led to Moody's Mood For Love. The combination is the epitome of the Black Radio Experience. Anyway, y'all know me and I had to go to YouTube looking for James Moody. I didn't find him nor King Pleasure, but check this out, I liked it, hope you do, too.

Oooh, look what I just found!!!

Thank YOU, God For Making Me A Woman

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

Oh the beauty parlor, the manis and pedis, shoe shopping and dress shopping...How I LOVE it ALL! I am so glad to be a WOMAN, (who is also a LADY). Is there anything more fabulous than spiky heels? If there is, I haven't found it yet. Wrap dresses, perfume and just the right eyeliner and mascara, add some lip color, and it makes me wanna just break out and smile. Put it all together and I have to give myself as high-five...ooo whee, I just love it!

R.I.P. Lelan Eddison Gill

More changes in the weather today. Yesterday's rains gave way to a beautiful day of sunshine. I never even ate lunch today. I just stayed in the playground and soaked up some rays. The sun felt good on my face. Hearing the children having such a wonderful time running, climbing and laughing just because it was Friday and they were having fun. With such a busy weekend ahead, it was fantastic being able to just sit and relax while the sun warmed my skin and let me sail off into a noon-day mental vacation.

Rain

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

I really do love the rain. Sometimes it cleanses, sometimes brings forth new life, sometimes it hides the tears, sometimes it brings nourishment, sometimes it causes a flood. Rain...hearing the rain tap against the window pane, (as Al Green sings so emotionally and Bob Marley so seductively), can conjure up so many run-away thoughts and emotions. The ones I especially like are the thoughts I have while out walking. Clearing my mind, cleansing away the nonsense making room for the sense is one of the reasons why I love the rain so much. It makes me feel renewed and revived.

R.I.P. Alberta Joy

Spring is for beginnings. If there are beginnings, then that means there must have been endings. Spring always reminds me of the cycle of life. Alberta lived her life fully. She traveled every place she ever wanted to go and she went everywhere! She took life for a real ride. I learned a long time ago that tomorrow is not promised to any one of us. Use your gift of life to enjoy your life because this life is not a dress rehearsal, this is it...SHOWTIME! We just began a new spring season last Friday. What is the new beginning for this spring? I have a few things in mind for the spring 2009 season. Time to try something completely new and out of my comfort zone. A little scary, yes. Necessary? Absolutely! It is time to take control of the reins because it may be a bumpy ride down the track, but I'm ready for the ride. Where is your ride going this spring?

Back to Reality

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

See what a couple of days of nice weather can do to you. I was all googly-eyed with spring fever...then I had to put my down jacket back on. Yeah, the pink rain coat is cute, but , it is back in the closet alongside the green suede coat I wore last Tuesday. Shoot, its cold out there today, for real, for real. Coming back from "gettin my hair did", my head was cold. Where was my hat, or at least my Barack Obama baseball cap? At that point, an old funky bandanna that already knows the shape of my head (lol), would have been a most welcome friend. Finally the hood on my jacket won out and forget the new do, I had to be warm. It was a five block walk to the bus stop. So, as a result, there will be NO MORE pictures of beautiful gardens, references to barefoot strolls or star-gazing. All of that has got to wait until I can leave the beauty parlor without a hat! Then I'll know spring sprung. (If spring is sprung, does that mean summer sums? Just askin' ROTFL)

Peace within and out.

Thank you God, for showering me with Your Special Favor

Enjoy the beautiful graphics, I LOVE this song. They, (Luther and Cheryl), take me there whenever I hear it. Yup, there...to the land of starry-eyed gazes, sunsets on the beach, and barefoot strolls along the shore.

Look at what we have to look forward to in the very near future. I can hardly wait. This is one of my secret jewels of the city. I am counting down the days until I get the chance to visit it again. I think I'll make a visit on Mother's Day. I'll be surrounded by all of the Natural Beauty I love so much, but then I can immediately return to the reality that any culinary style I desire is easily satisfied with resturants to satisfy every palate imaginable within 10 minutes. Now, that's living. "Thriving is fine, but living is grand." (Dr. Maya Angelou)

From the Mouth of a Babe

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

Today is Rachel's birthday. I searched high and low in the immediate neighborhood of my school, to try to get an Entemann's cake for her. No luck, lots of fast walking to get to all of those stores and get back on time, but still... no cake. The 99 Cent store had Fruit Cake, probably left over from Christmas, so I took a pass. Finally on the way back, a half-block from my original stating point, I wound up in Dunkin Donuts with the intention of getting donut holes. The next thing I knew, I was asking what flavor was the pink ice cream cake, no, not that one, the one with the flowers? I thought I was doing something nice for a little girl. How very wrong I was. When the class had finished lunch, I walked over to Rachel with the cake and lit candles. She saw her name on the cake and was very happy. The class sang and she made her wish and blew out her candles. She looked at me and said, "This is the best day of my life! This is the best cake I ever had!" That little girl was not the one who had the best day of her life...it was me. To see such pure joy in the eyes of a little girl who's just celebrated turning 6,is the best feeling in the world. Thank you, Rachel.

Still Missing Messiah

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

It is thirteen years ago today that Prince Messiah was taken away so suddenly. If nothing else, he reminded me to take care of myself. No one should die from the effects of Diabetes at 29 years of age, yet he did. He was an undiagnosed Diabetic. Please sisters and brothers, and I must include myself in this, schedule an appointment for a complete check-up. If there is anyone on this Earth who you love, do it for them as much as you are doing it for yourself. When there are people who love you and you leave them, they have an empty void that can never be filled. Stay here as well as you can for as long as you can. Messiah, I still miss you.

Love,

Nandi

We Can Make It, If We Try

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

Hang on in there.

Dirk, (my former husband), is now my friend. It took many years to get to this point, but, thank God we did. We're both grateful for the fact that honesty is what we've grown to appreciate about one another. He knows that the truth I believe is what I will share and the reverse is true with him. Reading his e-mails have become part of my routine. Lately, there haven't been any. So, I emailed him. He was feeling poopy. Many of us are also feeling poopy for one reason or another...okay, we're all feeling poopy about the same thing... we're all feeling poopy about the economy. This is the time to remember to name and claim what you desire. Dream, Believe, Achieve. Inspire or Be Inspired. Use your stumbling blocks as stepping stones, and "do what you're afraid to do." (Thanks, Eleanor Roosevelt) Just do it! (Nike) "Be the change you want to see in the world." (Gandhi) "You can make it if you try." (Sly Stone) "We are the ones we have been waiting for." (Alice Walker) If none of these work for you, insert your own. Just don't stay there, shake it off, because God is large and in charge and he didn't bring you this far to let you go. So...hang on in there. It doesn't last always, it'll be all over come morning. Just hold on to God's unchanging hand. Trust and believe. Dirk, as I told you in my email. as Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. said, "Keep the FAITH!" For we walk by Faith, not by sight.

Peace within and out.

YES, I CAN! YES, YOU CAN!

Women's Day

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

To ALL of the ladies who are members of the Baptist Church and you celebrate Women's Day at your church, you ought to acknowledge Nannie Helen Burroughs. She established the First Women's Day Celebration. She was a lifelong educator and activist. Those of you who attend or are members of Abyssinian Baptist Church,in Harlem, New York City, need to know she belonged to your church. She mentored Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during his early years. She departed this earth in 1961. We need to keep her name on the lips of our young ladies who may not know who she was and what she did. I was the Worship Leader for our service this morning. Our theme is, "The Faith of Christian Women in the Times of Adversity" Rev. Jannie Poullard, fed our souls with a wonderful word from the Lord. And yes, I WILL be like Esther as she demonstrated we may at times be desperate but we are also determined. Yes, I WILL keep the HOPE. Rev. Poullard kept it real and quoted James Brown, "It's a man's world, but, it's nothing without a woman or a girl" Hallelujah, 'nuff sed. Trouble doesn't last always, so make your cake! (Okay, for that one, you may have needed to be there.) There IS a bright side somewhere.

Val and I posed together outside of the church just before she had to go back inside to teach Sunday School. Our colors for the day were Pink and Gray. I think we look smashing in our gray dresses with pink accessories. It is also her actual birthday today, so Happy Birthday, Sister-in-Law, ( who is more of an honest to God blood sister than anyone could ever know)!!!

Yonna, Tina and I celebrated their birthdays at Sofrito on 57th just east of 1st. Great food, great drinks, cool atmosphere, attentive staff. Oops, could it become a brand new favorite? Quite possibly. Gotta check it out during the week. The place was packed last night, and Orlando, our server said, this was a light turn-out for a Friday.

Thank you , Bob Marley

Don't let anyone make you believe you can't. Yes, you can. Most of all don't be the one telling yourself that you can't. You better than anyone else know that you can! Don't let F.E.A.R. (False Evidence Appearing Real), become a roadblock to your greater you. You owe it to yourself to stand up when that little voice in your head begins nagging with doubt. Don't overthink the situation, just act on the faith that He didn't bring you this far to let you go.

Let go and let God. Get up, go out and grab your slice of life. Don't worry if you get a few lemons along the way, I'll bring the sugar, we'll get some water and drink our lemonade as we travel on our roads that lead vision fulfilled.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Bell!

So, I'm on a mission. I want to challenge myself to kick the exercise up a notch. Who's gonna help me? I walk every day, but,now I need to workout and I HATE WORKING OUT!!!!! The arms and thighs need a little work, (gee, thanks a lot Michelle Obama with your bad ass biceps) c'mon...which one of my dedicated loyal friends is willing to join in with me on the fitness challenge. How about we make a three month commitment? Ev, I'm calling you out since you live closest to me. Whaddaya say? We'll still have our curves, they'll just be a size smaller and a little tighter. Puhleeze, it'll be so much easier with a buddy. Val, don't duck behind the bookcase, I see you over there, too. You're just a few blocks west, we really could do this, you know. Alright, I'll check it out for us. We'll be slammin' in our wrap dresses this summer.

Fight! Fight the Power! Rally at City Hall

Dedicated to the memory of Sean Bell and Michael Donald...Respect... ...VOTE...Fight, Fight the Power, You've GOTTA Fight the Powers That Be! (Thanks, Isley Brothers and Public Enemy)

Marina, Jillian and I went together to the big Union Rally at City Hall yesterday. (We never caught up to the others until... well that's another story.) Union members from all over the city and state, were present to raise our voices to the powers that be. Yes, we understand cuts need to be made. Check where there are duplicitous positions, non-essential positions and unnecessary, costly drains on the budget, and then act accordingly. As an educator, I believe people who are brought in from other countries and paid grand theft dough to teach us how to teach our own children should no longer be part of the equation. I've heard their daily salaries are at least $750.00 daily and I've heard as high as $900 daily. They are not doing anything we can't do at a much lesser cost to the system. I'm sure those in question have a very different perspective. This is just one woman's opinion. At the rally, I wore my white UFT knit cap, just like everyone else, this pic of me was taken in my friend's ride.

Did Michael Steele become a Rent-A-Negro right before our very eyes? Why in the world would he feel it necessary to apologize to Rush Limbaugh? Limbaugh said he wanted President Obama to fail. Is that what they really want? If the President fails, the country fails. After 8 years of Limbaugh's guy in office, hasn't he seen enough failure? Michael Steele who spoke so well on Saturday, did a 180 turn on Tuesday. Sad.
